Mai Kujaku, otherwise known as Mai Valentine. One of the few prominent female duelists in the Yu-Gi-Oh series

Introduction

Mai Kujaku (Mai Valentine in the dub) is one of the few regular female duelists seen in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters series. She first appears on the ship to Duelist Kingdom, and often uses her feminine wiles to attract men. She seems to only be participating in duelist tournaments for the money, having previously worked as a card dealer aboard a casino ship. She had no particular purpose in life until she met Yuugi Mutou and his friends. Slowly, Mai's icy facade seems to disappear. She grows to respect Yuugi and Katsuya Jounouchi, and comes to be a good friend to the gang.

In the anime, after the events of Battle City when she loses her duel with Malik Ishtar, Mai develops a fear of defeat, associating it with being unable to support herself. Mai feels the need to detach herself again from Yuugi and the gang, and she becomes a DOOM (DOMA) warrior (alongside Valon). She duels against her one-time friend Jounouchi twice. It isn't until she's won and Jounouchi willingly gives up his soul that Mai realizes what a mistake she's made, losing her friend over such a stupid thing, and finally sees the error of her ways. She attempts to get revenge for the loss of both Jounouchi and Valon's souls by defeating Dartz herself, but Rafael defeats her, and she loses her soul instead. She regains her soul once Dartz is defeated. Before taking off once again, Mai leaves one of her Harpie Lady cards with Valon.

While she was invited to participate in the KC Grand Prix, she does not show up. Mai is not seen again except briefly in Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Movie, the subsequent seasons of the anime, including the KC Grand Prix arc and the Pharaoh's Memory arc. She is last seen in the ending credits of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters anime, dueling alongside Vivian Wong against the Meikyuu Brothers (Paradox Brothers) atop the Great Wall of China.

She serves as something of a role model to Shizuka Kawai (Serenity Wheeler), Jounouchi's younger sister, after Mai helps Otogi rescue her during Battle City. While she was irritating to Anzu during Duelist Kingdom, by Battle City, Anzu sees her as a friend who has a penchant for being annoying.

Naming

"Kujaku" means "peahen". Her name in the English anime is a pun of the phrase "My Valentine".

In the English anime, Mai usually addresses everyone, aside from Seto Kaiba, by their given name. In the Waking the Dragons arc of the dubbed anime, she only refers to Joey as "Wheeler," (his surname) until the very end of their final duel. When she finally overcome the lies she was told, she refers to Joey by his given name once more. While in the manga and the original Japanese anime, almost everyone, including Mai, calls Jounouchi by his family name.

In the original Japanese version of the series, Mai addresses others quite informally. She uses the potentially condescending "anta", a contraction of the more formal "anata" (the english equivalent of "hun" from "honey"). Like Kaiba, Jounouchi and Honda; she disregards honorifics, but does use "-chan" when referring to Anzu and Shizuka.
