Anzu Mazaki (Téa Gardner) gives the term 'supporting role' a whole new meaning. She's childhood friends with main character Yuugi Mutou (Yugi Moto) and is always looking to help him out.

In the beginning of the manga, she makes her first appearance talking to Yuugi about the Millennium Puzzle Box, and later defending Yuugi when Katsuya Jounouchi (Joey Wheeler) and Hiroto Honda (Tristan Taylor) take the box and poke fun at Yuugi.

While her living environment isn't specified, Anzu is forced to secretly work at Burger World (despite not being allowed by school rules) to raise money toward her dream: becoming a dancer and studying ballet in New York City.

Anzu is very compassionate, kind, and caring as she shows many times by cheering on her friends as they duel and fight to save the world. However, she doesn't always stay on the sidelines. To regain the qualifying star chips in the Duelist Kingdom tournament, she challenges Mai Kujaku (Mai Valentine) to a duel-- and wins. She's also verbally fought against even Seto Kaiba on a few occasions to protect those she cares about.

Secretly, an unrequited love has built up inside Anzu for the enigmatic Dark Yuugi, the spirit residing in the Millennium Puzzle. However, because the spirit possesses her best friend, Yuugi, much confusion is bottled up within her.

Despite this, and everything else, Anzu sticks by her friends, no matter what.
